Houston Golf Review 2011

Here at Houston Golf Review, we are excited about the coming of a new year. Looking forward, we are hoping to be able to add some new features to the website, plan some fun events, and really carry out the vision that we have for the Houston golfing community.

2010 proved to be a year of both successes and failures on our part. Some of the things that we hoped to accomplish had to be put on a back burner.

As the new year approaches we are even more focused and dedicated to providing and building a great resource and community for Houston golfers to visit and interact.

We’ll keep you posted as we begin to redesign and plan for the upcoming events. In the meantime, we wish you a very Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year!

Longest Golf Course in the World

Last week, I came across a story about a new golf course opening up in Australia next month. New courses come and go, but this one is special.

The course is 842 miles long and takes four days to play! Apparently, the long stretch of highway through the desolate Outback of Australia’s Nullarbor Plains, starting at Ceduna in the state of South Australia and finishing at the mining town of Kalgoolie in Western Australia needed some excitement.

The course plays as a  Par 71, using some existing holes at local golf courses along the way, as well as holes that have been crafted from synthetic grass in the middle of the desert.

Greens fees will be a modest $40 when the course opens.

Sounds like the ultimate road trip.

Donald Trump Comments on Junior Golf

Last week, Golfweek posted a couple of podcasts featuring Donald Trump. Trump hosted the U.S. Junior Championship at one of his courses and seemed to be quite impessed with the playing skill of the players.

The first meeting of the Houston Golf Review Meetup is coming together nicely. Read the details below, then go to: http://www.meetup.com/houston-golf-review to register to become a part of the group.

First, we will meet at Melrose Park Golf Course, 401 Canino Houston, Tx 77076 at 9 a.m. The course is an 18 hole Par 3 course. Not too hard. Interesting to play. If you need directions, Mapquest the address or you can call the course at 281-931-4666. Or, click on the Sponsor link on our Meetup page to go to their website for directions and more information.

Special Happenings
Here’s what has come together so far. Everyone who attends will receive a driving range discount card which can save you up to $24 over the course of 10 buckets of balls, courtesy of Melrose Park Golf Course.

Here’s another treat! Golf Pro, Andy Garza, will be with us to share golf swing tips and talk to us about how to improve our game.

Both Andy and the course manager, Jim Walton, have been very encouraging and helpful in planning this first Meetup, so please share your appreciation with them when you get to the course.

Special Offering
In an effort to get us off to a good start and encourage the group the grow, I’ve created some promotional materials for you to use to help tell others about the Houston Golf Review Group.

Go to the “Files” section of our meetup site. You can download a Tear-Away Flyer to post on bulletin boards to promote the group in general. I’ve also created an Invitation card that you can use to specifically invite people to the July 25 event.
Here’s the kicker. The individual who gets the most people to the event will receive a FREE ROUND OF GOLF at Melrose that can be used that day or anytime afterward.

We’ll start out on the driving range at 9a.m. Andy Garza will start his presentation at about 9:15a.m. Then, those who want to play the course can tee off.
Everyone will get a chance to introduce themselves. We’ll discuss what you would like the future events to look like. It will be a lot of fun. Can’t wait.

For those of you who have RSVP’d “Maybe”, please go to the Meetup Page and change your response to either “Yes” or “No” as soon as possible so that I can prepare what we need for the day. I am working on some more cool stuff, so watch your email.

As always, feel free to email with any questions or suggestions. I’m here to serve the group.
